And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God. John, 3: 19-21 Paul paced up and down the sidewalk. He looked down at his watch again and then stared back down the street, hoping to see his black Navigator anywhere in the throng of traffic. He dialed Derrick's cell phone again and cursed in frustration when he heard the voice mail message for the twentieth time. Lilly was standing behind him biting her nails, nervously exchanging glances between Paul and the traffic. Derrick had been gone for almost two hours and Paul was almost frantic. Derrick would call home if he was going to be so much as ten minutes late, so Paul knew something had to be terribly wrong. The door of the cleaner's flung open and the sound of the little bell made Lilly jump.
"Mr. Brooks, your son's on the phone!"
Paul blew by his employee who was holding the door open, with Lilly following closely behind him whispering "Thank God" under her breath. Paul wiped the sweat from his face with one hand and snapped the phone up with the other.
"Derrick, where have you been?! I've been calling your cell phone for over an hour", Paul spat out almost breathlessly.
"Mr. Brooks? This is Nurse Whitehead. Now stay please calm, but your son's been in a car accident" said the voice on the other end of the phone. Paul felt his knees buckle and leaned against the counter for support. Lilly looked up into his face and saw his reaction. She grabbed Paul by the elbow, not knowing if he really was going to fall to the floor.
"Now's he fine and just has some bumps and bruises. He's in the emergency room at….."
Paul shoved the phone to Lilly and ran to get the keys to the delivery van. By the time he pulled around to the front Lilly had her purse in her hand and jumped into the van before Paul could even bring it to a complete stop. She slammed the door and told Paul which hospital Derrick was in. Paul pushed on the emergency blinkers and the two of them drove in silence as Paul frantically navigated through the traffic. Lilly wanted to ask him to slow down but she kept quiet and tightly gripped her door handle. Paul ignored the horns blaring and profanities directed at him as he cut other cars off and ran through red lights. Lilly was shocked they didn't get into an accident or get pulled over.
